Revealing Unknown #5 ... Dun dun dun
Thank you for joining us on this journey. Kelsey and Monica are proud to present their unknown bacteria, their baby, unknown #5 Staphylococcus epidermidis!!!
We used out results and followed the flow chart from the handout to determine the identity of our unknown. First we began with acknowledging our unknown was Gram-positive. The next test in determining the identity was Catalase test. Our Catalase test was positive which brings us to the next test: the mannitol test. We saw some growth on the mannitol plate, but not enough to indicate a positive test. We then followed the negative mannitol test to the pigment test. Our pigment test was negative. This led us to examine the results of the fructose test, which was positive. Through following the flow chart, we finally came to the conclusion that our bacteria was S. epidermidis.
